At the beginning of my language stay in Canada with Education First, there was something I was struggling with a little, and that was keeping my emotions in check… When you go on this sort of trip, you meet lots of people from all over the world. Some will be staying just as long as you, some not so much.
The first few days of your stay can be challenging, you don’t know anybody, you are the new face in class. To begin with, you automatically drift towards the people who speak the same native language as you do, but if you do that avoid speaking your mother tongue. Otherwise you’ll never learn the language! In my case, after a few days I naturally started to get to know some of the other students.
This takes you on to stage 2, which is when you really start to enjoy yourself. By now you’re really getting on, and even bonding with your new friends. What’s more, you’re making plans to do things as a group and most importantly starting to really enjoy your trip together. What could be better?
But as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end, and just like that you come back to earth with a bump, and stage 3 kicks in, which is just terrible. Some people come for really short stays of 1-2 months. This is why one of the most frequent weekend activities was taking friends to the airport to say goodbye. I might be a guy, but it was still one of the things I dreaded the most… To be totally honest, I often had tears in my eyes… It was even worse when several people left over the same weekend… But I promise, with time you’ll be able to cope with this experience!
In this situation, the most important thing is to take your mind off it, go out with your friends who are still there or do something you enjoy so that you don’t waste too much time! Don’t forget, life goes on, and you’ll always have fond memories of your time away.
