Mandelbärli: The legendary almond bears from Bern

16 September 2022

As you may know, the emblem of the city of Bern is a bear. You will see the bear on the flag of the canton of Bern, but also on all derivative products. You can also find real bears in the old town of Bern in the bear pit.

The locals are fans of the « Mandelbärli », which are small teddy bears made of almonds paste and offered in different flavors. Originally, the Glatz bakery/confectionery in Bern made chocolate bears. In 1989, for the 125th anniversary of the bakery, they wanted to create something special and the first « Mandelbärli » was born.

Since that day, the brand has continued to grow. Today, there are about ten different flavors. In addition to the classic range (Nature, Chocolate, Cappucino, Blueberry, Lemon, Irish cream, gluten free, etc.), they have created seasonal bears (Strawberry, Honey, Chestnut, Coconut, Pistachio, etc.).

You can easily find it in any store in Berne, the Glatz bakery has the complete collection and the Coop City, Ryfflihof in downtown Berne, also has part of the selection.  Mandelbärli is a product that is easy to bring back from your stay in Bern. The locals frequently include it in the Christmas calendars they prepare for their loved ones or in gift boxes. It is also often eaten as a small dessert or as a snack.
